By 2030, we aim to accomplish the following for our two venues:
-
Climate Action & Air Quality: Eliminate our scope 1 carbon emissions through renewable energy, sustainable transportation, zero waste, and carbon offset programming.
a.) 2021 Spark Goal: Begin true carbon emission tracking for operations taking place at the Salt Palace and Mountain America Expo, then set our reduction targets accordingly (including the examination of scope 2/3 emissions as well).
-
Zero Waste: We hope to operate at a 90%+ landfill diversion year in and year out. This would also mean that trade shows would largely need to strive for and achieve 90% landfill diversion. This is accomplished via community partnership through recycling and reuse of leftover trade show materials.
a.) 2021 Spark Goal: 70% diversion for Salt Palace / 40% diversion for Mountain America Expo
-
Energy & Water Conservation: While we have reduced our footprints for energy (by 38%) and water (by 25%) since 2008, we continue striving for efficiency everywhere possible
-
Partnership:
a.)Events Industry Council Sustainable Event Standards (EIC SES): As an ongoing goal, we are committed to inspiring others to adopt these certifications (click for more info on EIC SES).
■ 2021 Spark Goals: Pursue more supplier certifications such as hotels and general service contractors (Salt Lake leads the industry with four EIC certifications as of 2020). Launch our Sustainable Event Certification Program, certifying at least one event to the EIC SES Event Organiser certification.
b.)Education & Awareness: Maintain a partnered approach to offering businesses and the hospitality community best practices, tools, and support in building sustainable economic models (including support of Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City government).
c.) Equality: We are committed to taking these actions through an inclusive approach, empowering diverse voices and perspectives to achieving equitable climate action. Community partnerships will be built to do this.
